Friday morning I leave for Asheville to visit my mom and step-dad for the weekend- because I'm crazy and thought Mother's Day was THIS weekend, not last weekend. So were having a delayed celebration. I'm also meeting with Danny and were driving back home together Sunday. But for now, I'm grateful for this peace and quiet for 2 days.

A little quiet time
With my two best friends taking classes in Spain for the next six weeks and Danny on a mini trip on the Appalachian trail with some friends, it's been pretty quiet around these parts. Last night I got home about 10 pm from my nursing class and then got into bed and watched Golden Girls (Is there anything better)? This morning I was hoping to sleep in a little but Junebug, ever the crazy kitty, woke me up at about 8 with her meowing. So I decided to make some breakfast. I had Texas toast with a little heirloom tomato salad with basil from the garden with a poached egg on top and some shaved parmesan. June had turkey from a leftover club sandwich in the fridge, but she didn't seem to mind. It's sort of fun getting to eat things for breakfast that I normally wouldn't because Danny is such a picky eater. A tomato salad with basil AND egg would have been overload for his picky palate.

Falling into Fall
October is here! Something about fall makes me very ambitious to try all the DIY home projects and crafts I've been procrastinating on all summer because of the heat. Having a small apartment with two other room-mates can be difficult because of conflicting styles and taste preferences, but luckily my room-mates pretty much give me free reign with decorating. Here are some the projects I will (or at least would like to) tackle this week:

school daze..
Last week, I started school again, this time though at a community college to get an associates degree in dental hygiene or as a physical therapy assistant. So far, I love it. It definitely has a different feel than a 4 year university though. It seems like a much better fit for me so far and I wish I had started here to begin with- but I guess you learn the best through trial and error.
Anyway, I have a birthday coming up soon! And what would any blog be without the occasional round-up/wish-list? So here are a few things I wouldn't mind opening up on the big day.

When Life hands You...
I've never really been a school person. Since middle school my grades have not been refrigerator-hanging worthy. I saw therapists about it and my mom spent a lot of sleepless nights wondering if I had some learning disability or if I was just plain lazy. I've finally realized how many other types of intelligence exist- and schools only measure one or two of them. I know I'm smart, and I also know I'm not lazy. Something about school just doesn't appeal to me. I love making things, getting out, and cooking. So obviously going to college was not one of my priorities, but I went as a favor to my mom because I love her and didn't want to upset her. Not surprisingly, my grades there weren't stellar either.
So, after a lot of soul searching, and learning to accept that it's okay not to follow the path your parents and most of your family took, I've decided to take a little break from a 4 year university. Dealing with the unknown is pretty terrifying but also exhilarating. I'm not sure what I want to do; attend a community college and learn a trade that will get me out in the working world (which has always appealed to me), or focus on work now. but either way, I'm excited to finally try something I want to do and see where it takes me!

That's one way of taking it..
I love charlotte Taylor's take on the idea of animal prints. It's been a big trend all fall/winter but this playful variation is just what we need for F/W 2011. Wish I owned all of it!!

New Year's resolution...In February.
This blog began as nothing more than a school project on texture in design...which was rushed and finished one night back in December. I have often thought about continuing it but never got around to or knew what to incorporate until now. Honestly, I'm still not sure where I'm going with this thing but I figured no one is really reading and I'm still learning so that's okay.
I moved to Greensboro 2 years ago for school and immediately wrote it off as a city with no interesting attractions, art, food, etc. Growing up in Asheville N.C., I was a little spoiled with all it had to offer. The parts I saw of Greensboro were at first ugly and lifeless. However, after living here slightly longer I've come to realize that Greensboro is a beautiful city in its own way. It's a little rough around the edges but digging deeper reveals its amazing center, home to tons of history, restaurants and fun things to do on a saturday afternoon. So, I want to learn even more about my new home city and write about it here.
I also happen to be an apparel design major, so there will be an abundance of fashion/style rants and raves (sorry). I suppose this is just a way to look back one day and see all that I've done and how I've grown.
